What is a Membrane Switch?
A membrane switch is an innovative alternative to traditional mechanical switches. It comprises several layers and is usually made from flexible materials like plastic film or polyester. The membrane’s components include a circuit, spacer, and graphic interlay. Here are their purposes and how they work:
- Circuit: The circuit transmits signals to the device to tell it that a specific button or function is activated.
- Spacer: Switch spacers block contact between the button’s conductive layers, preventing accidental pressing.
- Graphic Overlay: Membrane overlays display symbols, text, and instructions on how to operate it. We customize a wide range of quality overlays.
How Does a Membrane Switch Work?
Membrane switches are designed to operate and function efficiently. When their buttons are pressed, the top conductive layers connect with the bottom ones. This initiates and completes electrical circuits that signal to the switches’ controls that the buttons have been pressed. After releasing the buttons, the circuits end. Some membranes feature tactile feedback, alerting the user that the button has been pressed and is operating. The feedback feature functions because of a dome element that causes a physical sensation to the finger, signaling the switch's use.

TACTILE VS. NON-TACTILE MEMBRANE SWITCHES
The two primary membrane switch styles include tactile and non-tactile. We customize and design each style for large-scale industrial and commercial industries. Here are their primary differences and how they can meet your needs:
- Tactile: Tactile switches give a physical snapping sensation to the touch or make a noise when the button is activated. They are ideal for users who need complete confirmation that their device is operating, such as those who operate electronics or industrial controls.
- Non-Tactile: Non-tactile switches are typically silent and do not generate physical alerts or responses. Instead, they usually have a light that signals activation. This switch type is suitable for operations requiring silence or low noise levels.
BRIGHTEN THE WAY WITH OUR BACKLIT MEMBRANE SWITCHES
Our backlit options ensure switch interfaces are visible in low-lit or dark facilities. They make using the switch more intuitive and user-friendly, optimizing your operations. Our backlights include:
- MaxFilm Proprietary Backlighting: This cutting-edge light guide film (LGF) distributes light evenly across surfaces and has a thin profile.
- LED Backlighting: LEDs are among the most common backlight types and are used for many purposes, including lighting keyboards, icons, and symbols.
- Fiber Optic Backlighting: Our fiber optic technology, situated between the overlay and circuits, provides consistent and uniform lighting.
- Electroluminescent Backlighting: Electroluminescent lighting (EL) comprises thin panels that illuminate when struck by an electric current.
LONG-LASTING CUSTOM MEMBRANE KEYPADS
