CASE STUDY:
How MSI Streamlined Tidel’s Barcode Process
At Marking Systems, we pride ourselves on serving the unique needs of our customers. We strive to get it right — even if it means we have to get creative to overcome challenges. A longtime client of MSI, Tidel is a leading provider of cash management systems and robbery deterrent products. More than half of the top 100 U.S. retail organizations trust Tidel to secure, automate and streamline their cash management environment. Here’s how we stepped in with a creative solution when they needed a process to be streamlined.
Challenge
The product was barcodes. And it was complex. Tidel had multiple types of barcode labels that consisted of different quantities, sizes, and types. We were printing multiple orders for them on our Indigo press, which requires an expensive indigo-coated material. Costs were adding up. In the second part of the process, we would die cut the parts with a two-stage die. That took time. The whole process involved multiple parts and different quantities. For Tidel, that meant having to place a lot of orders for their barcodes, paying for extra setups and keeping track of delivery times. In short, there were a lot of moving parts. There had to be a better way.How We Solved It
We talked with Tidel’s engineering team and came up with a format that would simplify the process. Instead of ordering one roll for each size of barcode, we combined all of the sizes and barcodes in one format. In other words, we put different-sized barcode stickers on one roll.
In changing to this method, Tidel invested in a Zebra printer for their production line so they can now print the labels in house. We went to the Tidel facility to help their team set up the Zebra printer. We don’t sell the printer but we are happy to help our customer get it set up and make their production line more efficient.
Results
This change in process saved Tidel money and time. Now, we provide custom-cut blank labels to Tidel and they print the barcodes on them in house. They print multiple sizes on a roll in house instead of ordering each size separately. Now that they are using their own Zebra printer, they no longer need indigo-coated material so they have saved on raw material cost as well.
In the end, MSI lost a decent dollar amount in business with Tidel but we were happy to help them streamline their process and make it more efficient. Tidel has been a customer with MSI for 20+ years and we value the relationship and partnership we have together!
